Drawn from oral traditions, fairy tales distil our dreams and fears into stories of magic and transformation. Here five celebrated global authors offer us distinctive retellings of ancient tales that have survived and evolved through the centuries.

Listen to an evocative live reading of stories, from Salman Rushdie’s distinctive take on a classic tale from Arabian Nights to Marlon James’ visceral riff on African folklore.

The performance includes specially commissioned stories from Daisy Johnson and Sharlene Teo, drawing from English and Singaporean traditions.

With a company of actors and musicians directed by Jack McNamara of New Perspectives, Once Upon Our Times takes audiences across the world, giving new resonance to timeless narratives.
